Friend’s of Rock Creek’s Environment/Black Cat Ivy: Rock Creek Park is one of the world’s premier urban forests—a green oasis in the midst of a bustling metropolitan area. However,invasive plants, particularly vines, are degrading the forest by weakening and killing trees, preventing new growth, and reducing biodiversity. Volunteers will cut vines and pull plants, under the supervision of an NPS Park Ranger and trained “weed warriors.” Most work will be performed with hand tools; some work will require hand-pulling. www.friendsofrockcreek.org |

Fairfax ReLeaf: In the last two decades, 35% of northern Virginia’s urban forest has been bulldozed and chainsawed. Fairfax ReLeaf’s aim is to conserve, restore and promote sustainable urban forests in northern Virginia by restoring native trees on public common land and to educate government and the public about the values and benefits of the urban forest.
